Network Backup: Common Questions
I set up a backup task to back up files from a network share. The files to be backed up are stored on a file server on the network and locked by another user. Why are these files skipped and how can this be resolved?
Files stored on a network can be backed up using BackupChain using a pull strategy (that's what you're doing now) but Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service doesn't permit unlocking files over the network. In order to backup locked files, these files need to be local; hence, you can resolve the problem by installing the BackupChain backup program on the network file server itself.
Note that BackupChain is fully compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 installations.
