Easy Backup: Myth or Reality?

Is an easy backup a myth, a realistic idea? That is the question many IT administrators and end users often ask themselves, especially when they encounter problems when backing up.

Many backup solutions tout their solution is "easy" or they make claims that backing up files and important data can be an easy task. Some of these claims are true and then again some are naive as the term easy backup depends on the final user of the product and their system environment.

In today’s market there are newer solutions that do fit the "easy backup" label as many programs are catering to non-professional home users. To develop an easy to use utility, the software should contain only very few and simple steps to backup the files. These steps should also appear on one page and not continue on following pages which will lead to confusion. Pop up tools and navigators will contribute to the easy backup title.

The downside to the easy backup notion is that backups aren't easy when we consider the environment of IT professionals, such as IT administrators, data center operators, and software developers. This group has very particular needs and complex IT setups that cannot be met with a simple, one-screen user interface.

For example, on a server platform there are hundreds of Volume Shadow Copy Errors possible due to the incompatibility between the software installed and VSS. In addition, data centers host even hundreds of servers, physical and virtual, and need to be able to specify precisely their backup settings to optimize their resource usage.

Easy backups, then, are only easy when dealing with a simple PC. As soon as complex software interdependencies, server operating system settings, and virtualization are involved, organizations should choose an experienced partner to facilitate their backup infrastructure setup. BackupChain was developed to meet the needs of IT professionals and provide the IT administrator with all the tools needed to master today's backup challenges.

Easy backups? We work by Einstein's brilliant quote: "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
